Hitachi in Singapore

The 12th Hitachi Young Leaders Initiative (HYLI) was held in Bangkok, Thailand, from July 1st – 5th, 2013, bringing together twenty-eight top university students from Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, along with prominent opinion leaders, to discuss regional challenges. The event aimed to deepen the student delegates' understanding of regional challenges and opportunities, while promoting Asian unity, encouraging cross-cultural exchange, and offering a platform for diverse perspectives to cultivate a network for the next generation of leaders across Asia. About 350 people attended the event, including representatives from the government, business, and universities in Thailand.

HYLI 2013 Student Delegates’ Learning Journey

The theme of this year’s program, "The Road Ahead: ASEAN’s Role in Asia and the Global Economy," sought to deepen the student delegates' understanding of ASEAN and Asia’s pivotal role in the global landscape and its potential for driving sustainable growth in the future. The program featured final presentations from the delegates, addressing the following sub-themes:

  • 1) AEC 2015: What can ASEAN really expect and Asia’s relevance in the global economy
  • 2) Enhancing regional connectivity for a more competitive and resilient ASEAN

During the five-day program in Bangkok, student delegates participated in various activities, including forums, workshops, fieldwork, and a press conference.

Day 1 to 2 | 1 - 2 July 2013

The event began with opening remarks and a keynote speech, setting the stage for the event. Over the first two days, a forum was held, featuring insightful presentations and engaging panel discussions led by experts and high-ranking officials. These sessions provided valuable perspectives on key regional challenges and opportunities.

Day 3 to 5 | 3 - 5 July 2013

After engaging with distinguished speakers on the first two days, student delegates participated in three days of intensive workshops, sharing ideas on the theme. Field trips and a cultural tour to Thailand’s leading state-owned power utility, EGAT, Chulalongkorn University, and Hitachi Metals (Thailand) Ltd. further enhanced their understanding of the topics.
