Hitachi Young Leaders Initiative 2024

The 17th Hitachi Young Leaders Initiative (HYLI) 2024 was held in Bali from July 23rd - 26th, 2024. Thirty-two top student delegates from the eight countries (Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Myanmar) were chosen to represent their countries at the programme. The HYLI programme enhanced the delegates' understanding of regional and global issues by fostering Asian solidarity among young leaders, promoting cross-cultural education and experiences, creating a platform for diverse viewpoints to build a network for future Asian leaders.

HYLI 2024 Student Delegates’ Learning Journey

The 17th Edition of HYLI 2024, under the theme of “Greening Together: Inclusion & Sustainability”, was developed to enhance the student delegates’ perception and understanding of how sustainability plays a part in creating a more socially responsible and inclusive society. This year's edition featured four final presentations by the delegates, each focusing on a critical aspect of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs):

  • 1) Good Health & Wellbeing (SDG 3)
  • 2) Affordable & Clean Energy (SDG 7)
  • 3) Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10)
  • 4) Sustainable Cities & Communities (SDG 11)

  • The pre-conference activities for HYLI 2024 were specifically designed to introduce the program and outline its objectives and expected outcomes for all participants. These sessions provided an essential foundation for the delegates, helping them grasp the significance of their involvement in the program.

Orientation - Day 0 | 22 July 2024

  • The delegates engaged in an icebreaking game of creativity by building a "Smart & Sustainable City" model. This activity emphasizes eco-friendly practices, focusing on renewable energy and green spaces, as the delegates brainstormed and created miniature cities. The purpose of this activity was to foster teamwork, encourage innovative thinking, and raise awareness about sustainable urban planning.

Day 1 | 23 July 2024

  • Opening of HYLI 2024. Understanding the changes in HYLI throughout the years and the urgency of need for sustainability and inclusion in our society.

Day 2

Day 2 | 24 July 2024

  • Site visit to Microgrid site on Nusa Penida Island. Hands-on experience in understanding how the project plays a part in providing clean energy to the community and supporting Indonesia's energy transition. The visit included a detailed exploration of the solar panels integrated into the microgrid system, demonstrating how solar energy is harnessed and distributed to support local communities.

Day 3

Day 3 | 25 July 2024

  • Communication Workshop. Discuss, deepen and develop their ideas with fellow delegates in terms of teamwork and effective communication to incorporate various ideas into their presentations. The delegates engaged in a session with experienced communication professionals, gaining valuable insights into advanced communication strategies and receiving feedback to refine their skills.

Day 4

Day 4 | 26 July 2024

  • Presentation Day & Cultural Night. HYLI delegates presented their ideas and perspectives in teams to an esteemed advisory panel and to receive feedback on how their ideas can help society to become more sustainable and inclusive. The day ended with the delegates from each country showcasing their cultures, celebrating the rich and diverse traditions of Asia.
