How Does Our Daily Business Activity in Hitachi Affect the Society?

Dear Colleagues,

Last month, the historic Trump-Kim Summit took place in Singapore. The world turned its attention to this little red dot on 12 June and the country’s security was on high alert. Despite all the hype, people went about their daily routine unaffected just like 12 June was any other day. Which brings me to my question: how does our daily business activity in Hitachi affect the society at large?

In the Hitachi IR Day last month, President and CEO of Hitachi, Ltd. Mr. Toshiaki Higashihara declared that “Hitachi will utilise digital technologies and provide sophisticated social infrastructure globally (in order) to realise a better life for people all over the world.” His statement reiterated the goal of Hitachi’s Social Innovation Business where we hope to resolve issues that the society faces. The world that we know today is dealing with a wide range of social issues. And it is Hitachi’s mission to recognise these social issues and use our digital technologies and expertise to provide advanced social infrastructures, ultimately creating better lives for everyone.

This is especially true in ASEAN where urbanisation is rapidly taking place. With urbanisation comes social issues such as city congestion, water/air quality, poverty, rising inequalities etc. This is where Hitachi’s Social Innovation Business comes in. So let us press on to actively promote Hitachi’s solutions in this region, co-creating with our clients to make ASEAN more liveable.

Taking this opportunity, I would like to share a piece of good news with you. Chairman of Hitachi, Ltd., Mr. Hiroaki Nakanishi recently assumed the role of Chairman of the Japan Business Federation or Keidanren. This is the first time that an Hitachi executive is at the helm of the Keidanren and this speaks volume of Hitachi’s presence in the business, economic and political arena. Hitachi’s abilities to lead the change in the society is evidently shown in this new appointment.

What this means for the rest of us in ASEAN is the amount of influence that the Hitachi name brings.

As we enter the second quarter of FY2018, I hope you will constantly ask yourself the first question I posed you, on how the things we do daily in Hitachi contribute to the society.
