Taking Leisure Seriously at Hitachi Asia (Thailand)

Hitachi aims to foster growth and potential in both our employees' professional and personal lives. We believe in creating an inclusive and empowering work environment that encourages innovation and collaboration across different departments and generations. To achieve this, HAS-TH has introduced the concept of "Serious Leisure".

Serious Leisure involves turning a personal hobby into a tool for personal and professional development. It revolves around an activity that the employee is passionate about and regularly invests time and energy into until they become knowledgeable and skilled. This approach arose from the employees' intrinsic motivation and free will to pursue their interests outside of work.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have experienced a decrease in face-to-face interaction and engagement scores. To address this, we have initiated a project to encourage collaboration among our employees who are working from home. HAS-TH provides support through coaching questions and development plans to help employees turn their hobbies into Serious Leisure activities.

Employees with similar interests can form teams and establish clubs within HAS-TH. In April 2022, three clubs were approved by the Serious Leisure Committee after a pitch process and they have been actively participating ever since. We have faith that Serious Leisure will help foster stronger bonds among our colleagues and power collaborations across our company.
