Six things you need to know about COP26 and Hitachi’s involvement
1. What is COP26?
COP stands for Conference of Parties. This is the 26th meeting since the treaty was first signed in 1994 by countries that also signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), hence the name COP26.
2. Why is COP26 important?
As the world’s largest and most significant summit on global climate change, COP26 is taking place in Glasgow in November 2021. The summit will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. It has the potential to be a significant event in making more people aware of the importance of creating a de-carbonised society.
3. Why is Hitachi a Principal Partner of COP26?
As a company, our ambition is to become climate change innovators – helping governments, cities and customers reduce carbon. Through this sponsorship Hitachi wishes to raise awareness of its own environmental work and play our role in tackling climate change.
4. Three content areas
Through this sponsorship, Hitachi hopes to highlight our commitment to decarbonisation in the following three areas:
● Mobility - zero carbon vehicles
Showcasing and demonstration focused on electric and battery trains, and their critical integration with other modes of transport, as well as with logistics scheduling systems to create a joined-up passenger experience.
Example: may reference other ZEV mobility areas (i.e.: EV fleets / buses to illustrate integrated mobility solutions).
● Data, analytics and IoT
Demonstrate how previously discrete systems (transport, energy, retail delivery etc.) must collaborate - using data as the common currency - and Hitachi’s significant global role in this.
Example: Intelligent fleet decarbonisation using Optimise Prime as a core example.
● Net zero communities
Showcasing innovative products, green manufacturing and how to facilitate greener movement in urban environments.
Demonstrate the ideal convergence of IT, data and mobility.
Example: Lived experience of integrated building management systems.
5. Hitachi Asia is a Tier 2 Affiliate
Hitachi, Ltd. is the principal partner of COP26, while most of the regional headquarters (RHQs), like Hitachi Asia Ltd. are Tier 2 affiliates. For the full list of companies, please click here.

6. Restrictions
With Hitachi as a principal partner of COP26, there are restrictions to the mention and use of the COP26 logos and these differ as a tier 1 and 2 affiliates.
As a general rule of thumb, you may refer below:

Group Companies can be afforded certain access to the sponsorship rights as an “affiliate” if they satisfy these three conditions:
i. A wholly owned Hitachi Group business
ii. Covered by the Hitachi Corporate science-based targets
iii. Pass the UK Government’s due diligence process
Due to the presence of other UK energy companies* in the Principal Partner segment, Hitachi Business Units and Group Companies of the Energy sector (incl. Hitachi ABB Power Grids) will not be able to refer to themselves as Partners of COP26. If you are in any energy-related Group Company, please check with HAS-CCG separately.
