This issue, we visited Hitachi Aqua-Tech Engineering Pte. Ltd. (HAQT) to understand more about the alluring water business. HAQT provides high quality water treatment and engineering solutions for social infrastructure, and creative design innovation in water related lifestyle and recreation field.

Company Background

Since its inception in 1977, Hitachi Aqua-Tech Engineering Pte. Ltd. - a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi Infrastructure Systems (Asia) Pte. Ltd. (HIA) - has established extensive track records in the Asia Pacific, Indian Ocean regions and the Middle Eastern countries, and in the process built a strong reputation as a specialist in water solutions.

To further establish its footing in the water industry, as well as to generate synergies by utilizing both companies’ resources, HIA went on to acquire Aqua Works Engineering, a water features’ specialist in Singapore in 2015. In the following year, HIA decided to merge both companies.

Today, HAQT’s clientele include the government, hotel and resorts, municipalities, pharmaceutical, oil and gas, cogeneration plants, and marine and aviation. Through the collaborative support of Hitachi Asia Ltd. and its regional offices, HAQT was able to successfully expand its business within the Southeast Asia region.

And HAQT will continue to customize and co-create solutions with customers in order to seize the right opportunities and enhance more of their presence within the industry.

Products

HAQT has three main business areas. They are:

Standardized Products

HAQT provides high quality and competitive water treatment products, such as reverse osmosis (RO) desalination system, wastewater treatment, and ultrapure water etc. Under this category, their clientele consists mainly of hotel chains and resorts that require to purify seawater to clean drinking water. In this area, HAQT is renowned in the RO Desalination systems or watermakers.

Customized Solutions

Backed by in-depth diversified experiences, HAQT offers a high degree of customization and design to ensure deliverables of best-fit solutions for individual customers in different market sectors’ demand. For example, freshwater maker for FPSO (floating production storage and offloading), and potable water etc. Such customized solutions are widely sought after by specialized markets like the oil and gas industries.

Lifestyle and Recreation

HAQT also offers creative innovation, design engineering, installation and maintenance in the areas of pools, fountains, water theme parks and water features. Currently, HAQT is involved in the construction of the world’s tallest indoor waterfall in Jewel Changi Airport, which is slated to open in 2019.

Strengths of HAQT

HAQT understands the “One Hitachi” spirit and therefore embraces cross-selling. By combining water treatment systems and lifestyle and recreation solutions, as well as understanding and gathering technology know-how in all departments, HAQT is strengthening their interdivisional cooperation in order to expand their business. At the same time, HAQT can help potential and existing customers to achieve challenges and solute issues in the water field more aggressively.

Future Goals of HAQT

While HAQT struggles to maintain its market leadership in the water industry, it has plans to expand beyond the Southeast Asia region. HAQT understands their products are not unique in this industry which is why much focus is spent on building customer relationship and creative cross-selling. As the demands of water continue, water treatment solutions in developing countries and water related lifestyle and recreation planning for developed countries will increase. And HAQT will continue to customize and co-create solutions with customers in order to seize the right opportunities and enhance more of their presence within the industry.

A Day in the Life of our Colleague

Name: Lam Lai Leng
Designation: HR Manager
Company: Hitachi Aqua-Tech Engineering Pte. Ltd.

Tell us a little about what you do in Hitachi.

I brought dynamic human resource (HR) expertise to Hitachi Aqua-Tech Engineering Pte. Ltd. (HAQT) in 2016 where the company started expanding at an exponential rate. With support from the Water Business Unit (BU) HR team in Japan, we aligned as ‘One Hitachi’.

HR is not purely administration work, so I endeavour to become a Business Partner and work closely with the senior management to develop a HR agenda that supports the overall goals of the company.

Understand you recently graduated from the Second Intake of the Company of Good Fellowship1 in March 2018. Tell us more about your stint during this five-month program.

During those five months, it was an eye-opening experience for me to interact with other corporate fellows despite all of us being at different levels of corporate social responsibility (CSR). The Company of Good framework guides us on giving better by checking on the four “I”s:

  1. Investment – does HAQT give in more than one way that is aligned to the vision, mission, strategy and/or nature of our water solution business?
  2. Integration – Integrate business functions and support business interests.
  3. Institutionalization – Giving support through policies, systems and incentives.
  4. Impact - Putting mechanisms in place to measure impact.

Share with us on any initiatives you intend to roll out in FY2018.

Hitachi’s CSR on a global level is very active. Though in Singapore, HAQT only participates in the annual Orchard Road Christmas Light-Up. Moving forward, HAQT will “localize” our CSR to engage employees within the organization.

1 The Company of Good Fellowship is a talent development programme that empowers and develops top talents in organisations. It seeks to develop a community of corporate leaders who will strengthen the eco-system of corporate giving in Singapore.
