Hitachi Rail STS (Hitachi Rail) is a leading company operating in the sector of high technology for railway and urban transport. An international leader with a global presence in signalling and the implementation of integrated transport systems for Freight, passenger Railways and Mass Transit, Hitachi Rail designs, manufactures and implements signalling systems for the management and control of freight and passenger traffic on mainline railways as well as metros.


To date, Hitachi Rail has helped over 18 billion people travel. As a mobility solutions provider, Hitachi Rail accounts for 12% of Hitachi’s total business.


Company Background

Headquartered in Italy and formerly known as Ansaldo STS, the acquisition by Hitachi resulted in Hitachi Rail STS today.


In Asia-Pacific, the regional headquarter is in Brisbane where they take care of 9 other countries. Hitachi Rail STS Malaysia (HRSM) is one such country and since its establishment in April 2000, the company now has over 70 employees in their Kuala Lumpur office.


Current Projects

In 2017, HRSM successfully completed the Subang Skypark project.


Then in 2018, HRSM was awarded the signalling of the 198km track that extends between Gemas to Johor Bahru in southern Malaysia. The contract under Hitachi’s portion is worth approx. EUR 55 million. In addition to the delivery of the mainline signalling system, the Gemas to Johor Bahru signalling will also be upgraded. These are some initiatives undertaken by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) to upgrade Malaysia’s rail network with HRSM’s support.


On top of this project, the Klang Valley Double Track (KVDT) – Phase 1 project is also currently under delivery.


Future Goals of Hitachi Rail

Hitachi Rail targets to keep growing and meeting the demands of the market by producing advanced and reliable products that lead to the development of the most environment-friendly transport systems in the world.


With its focus on innovation, Hitachi Rail created a team to experiment and prototype the future transformation of processes and products. Some of the objectives of this team is to address totally new business opportunities, as well as spread the knowledge of new technologies within the company.


Eventually, Hitachi Rail hopes to become a world leader in the rail industry by promoting a culture of quality, safety and responsibility.

A Day in the Life of our Colleague

Meet Samson, HR Manager of Hitachi Rail STS Malaysia. An avid traveler who enjoys meeting new people. It’s no wonder he is a jovial man with over 30 years of HR experience where he manages different people. So far, his tenure with Hitachi has been a positive one, and he hopes to contribute more to the growth of Hitachi Rail STS Malaysia. Find out more about what Samson is like through his interview.

1. Understand Hitachi Rail STS Malaysia is still relatively new to the Hitachi family. How has your impression of Hitachi changed since the acquisition?

As I get to know about Hitachi after the acquisition, I realized that we are now a part of a very big organization with very diversified product range and services. Besides doing business and the bottom line, Hitachi also emphasizes a lot on environmental consciousness and contributes a lot to the welfare of the society.


2. Out of curiosity, what Hitachi products do you have at home? (e.g: fridge, microwave etc)

Fridge and vacuum cleaner


3. Are you an Introvert or extrovert? Tell us why.

Extrovert. My job requires me to meet people and conduct trainings, meetings and coaching. I also like travelling to different countries, meeting new people and understanding different cultures.


4. What are you most looking forward to this year?

For work, I am looking forward to experience more positive organizational changes and personally, I am looking forward to a good year-end vacation overseas.


5. What is one advice that you have for all Hitachi staff?

We must ensure continuous self-improvement, self-discipline as well as improvement in work processes. And of course, not forgetting to take care of our own health.
